CHAPTER SIX

I tried to relax in the hospital bed while playing my DS. I decided that I would just wait until the Chief and I were off following some lead before I would think about this case again. It was much easier to not think about losing Kari when I was distracted by being out in public. I had a lot more things to worry about and it would help take my mind off of anything bad that had happened.

But until then, I had my video games. It didn't really do a great job at defeating boredom, but it was better than nothing. It would only be a matter of time before they would get finished with all the lab work they needed to do to make sure I don't have cancer or the plague or whatever bad thing I could have gotten while a piece of shrapnel had lodged itself into my brain. I wasn't even watching the door, when suddenly it opened and a familiar voice surprised me.

"Mike! Oh my God I was so worried about you." A voice said. I looked up and my mouth fell open in shock and it forced me to drop my DS. Kari Matthews was standing right in front of me with not a scratch on her.

"H-h-h…how?" I finally managed to get out after stumbling over the word a few times. "Y-y-y-y-y-you-you are…"

"Late? I know… I'm sorry. The boss wanted this article out before the deadline so I had to finish it real fast." she explained. And it would've sounded like a good excuse… if it weren't for the fact that it was complete non-sense. Something wasn't right.

"The deadline is Sunday." I reminded her.

"Yeah, and I wanted to get the thing done so I could see you today."

"I was unconscious for almost a day. You couldn't have finished it then?" I wondered.

"Well, it was hard to work being all worried about you. Besides, I was a little shaken up from the explosion too." she explained.

"And your boss wouldn't give you a week extension after everything you and I went through? He wouldn't have made you work… and you wouldn't have let him do it." I said. Something definitely wasn't right.

What did this mean? Did the Chief lie to me about her dying? He wouldn't do that to me. He wasn't the type to play games. Besides, he knew that it would probably affect my ability to solve this case. And that call I just got from the Vigilante Killer seemed to suggest that she was also dead. Not to mention her excuse for not making it to the hospital until much later seemed impossible to believe. What kind of boss would make you work after a tragic event like that?

"I don't know what to tell you, Mike. That is what happened." she said.

"No. You are dead. You can't be here. Which means… I'm seeing things." I said with a little panic in my voice. I had never completely lost my mind before.

But hold on a second, I wasn't completely crazy yet.
